The Center for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS) Pier is located in San Luis Obispo Bay. The pier facility is located 12 miles from the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) campus on some of the most pristine California coastline south of the San Francisco Bay (Fig. 1). The overall mission of the CCMS is to increase knowledge about near-shore coastal processes, primarily through hands-on research and education of undergraduate students. To this end, the CCMS supports a broad array of research and educational activities including formal course instruction, federally-funded research, real-time coastal monitoring, community outreach, and visiting scientists. Although still a young facility, the CCMS is having a significant impact in each of these areas.
